Another border crossing is now open to dangerous trucks from Mexico. Mary Peters announced a new border crossing in Yuma, Arizona, yesterday.

Who better to put down the welcome mat for more trucks that don’t have to meet U.S. safety standards?

Here’s what Mary Peters, lawbreaker, had to say during her appearance in Yuma yesterday:

“Hard working men and women in places like Yuma understand how important trade is to the strength of our economy and the success of our country. They’ve seen the benefits of increased commerce between the U.S. and Mexico, and they’re reaped the rewards that come from the $332 billion worth of shipping that crosses our shared border every year.”

(What they’ve seen is 3 million jobs lost to NAFTA, more pollution on the border and an influx of dangerous trucks.) 

“They realize that the best way to prosper as a community and to thrive as a nation is to encourage and support even more of that trade….”

(The corporate fat cats are the only ones who will prosper and thrive. But they’re the ones who’ll fund her campaign for governor, so what does she care?) 

“When they saw an opportunity to build a vital new link to Interstate 8, they took it. And as a result, this region and this state are far better positioned to take advantage of one of the latest and most exciting developments to occur when it comes to cross border trucking…the new ability for U.S. truck drivers and U.S. truck companies to compete in Mexico. “

She had a few words for us, too:

“Unfortunately there are some who would seek to deny U.S. truckers these new opportunities. They think people want to be shielded from competition, protected from opportunity and denied success.”

(We think people want to be shielded from dangerous trucks and a dramatic erosion in their pay, benefits and work standards.) 

It’s bad enough that she’s still in office after defying Congress and keeping the border open. But she wants a promotion after she leaves — to governor of Arizona.

To all you residents of the Grand Canyon State: Be afraid, be very, very afraid.
